There are many people experiencing an installation error, while trying to install AVG 8.0. The following error message is displayed after the AVG installation fails:
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key….
Error 0×80070005
I’ve seen this, already, on a few machines and I’ve been trying to find a specific solution, with no luck. Obviously, most “solutions” are geared towards changing the registry permissions. This morning, I found what I was looking for.
The following contains instructions for making changes to the system registry. Please do not follow these instructions if you’re not familiar with the system registry. Changes to the system registry can potentially make your computer unusable.
Here’s how I fixed the problem…
- Open the registry editor and navigate to the following key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
- Right-click on the Windows key.
- Choose Permissions, then click Advanced.
- The first two entries should start with “Deny” pertaining to the “Everyone” group.
- Highlight the first entry and click Remove. Now remove the other “Deny” entry.
- Close the registry editor and try your installation again.
This should solve the problem. If it doesn’t solve your particular installation problem, visit the BleepingComputer.com forums.

Same problem here, my computer does not recognise me as administrator although I am the owner and only user. I have been working with Daniweb free tech forum for 5 days now.On the last lap I think there is a registry key missing in AVG I looked it up somewhere and the default key had HZ beside it and no value added. My final thing I have to do is change admin but if I do it in IE all my firefox stuff vanishes and I have spent hours getting all back. Waiting now on reply from the tech helping me about that before I try that step.Only time I use IE is when my ISP tech help is helping me.
Use AVG’s own removal tools
If you have a 32bit version of windows, use:
http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/support/avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1165.exe
If you have a 64bit version of windows, use:
http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/support/avg_remover_stf_x64_2011_1165.exe
Run the tool, restart the computer when asked. Works 99% of the time I would say.
What I am trying to do is remove the avg free version trail 2011 I get
Severity: Error
Error Code: 0xC0070643
Error Message: General Internal Error
Additional Message: The removal of the product failed
Context: Uninstallation of AVG
From Add/Remove Programs. The Icon still shows up on my task bar what to do?
wonderful, fixed it for me after a little monkeying, this darn rootkit is such a pain to clean up after
Thanks for this, saved me wasting time hunting it down. I had to log on in Safe Mode as Administrator to access the permissions – couldn’t obtain ownership even as a member of administrators.
After that it all worked a dream – Thanks.
Finally!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Yes I do. If you try to change the permissions from within a standard user account in Windows you will definitely get the following kind of errors:
“Unable to save permission changes on Windows
Access is denied.”
“Unable to set new owner on Windows.
Access is denied.”
You first need to logon to Windows as administrator or at least as a user who has an administrator account. Then you’ll be able to do things like change permissions of registry keys and or take ownership of them etc.
“Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key….
Access is denied.”
STILL having trouble with install. I’ve followed all instructions in this thread, and still no luck. When I go to save, I get permission denied – changes not saved. Any more suggestions? Thanks in advance . . .
thanks i did as said in the top and it worked.
If you have already uninstalled Bitdefender I suggest using the Bitdefender removal tool to automatically clean up any remaining traces, which AVG seems to be detecting.
The Bitdefender removal help page is at:
http://www.bitdefender.com/KB333-en–How-to-uninstall-BitDefender.html
Or just go straight to downloading the Bitdefender removal tool at:
http://www.bitdefender.com/files/KnowledgeBase/file/BitDefender_Uninstall_Tool.exe
This tool works on Vista (32 or 64bit systems). Download it and run it to erase any remaining traces of Bitdefender.
Try to install AVG again.
i m using windows vista.i used bitdefender earler as antivirus.now when i want to install avg antivirus it is asking me to unstall the bitdefender, though i have already unstalled it.please help me with this
Thank you very much, finaly I solved my problem.
Thanks a lot

Hi there. I found this resolution myself. As Tyr adds, when I tried to look at the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows it brings a ‘denied access’ error.
Before I could delete the two ‘deny’ entries I had to go to the key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows and right-click.
You will see a ‘permissions…’.
1. Left-click on: permissions… > advanced > Owner (tab)
2. Now left-click in ‘Change owner to:’ box.
3. Click on “Administrators”.
4. Now click OK twice. This procedure is what Calum is suggesting to take ownership.
Now right-click on the key again and follow the instructions to delete the two ‘deny’ entries described above. Good work all, this has really helped me.
Hi,
When i right click on the Windows then Advanced I can not see the “Deny” enywhere.
Than you
Stojan
Will this work with WIN 2000? I can’t find the filesyourefer to.
Awesome, worked perfectly! Thanks!
Thanks a million. This was the reason I was unable to uninstall AVG. You’ve helped me with a huge headache.
You need to take ownership. To do this, click Advance in the bottom left, go into the Owner tab and give either yourself, or a group your user belongs to, ownership.
You should be able to view and make changes now.
I can’t edit the permissions on that particular file nor can I see who/what has them. When I just click on the Windows folder I get a “Cannot Open Winows: Error opening Folder”. WHen I right click and select Permissions I get this “You Do Not Have Permission to View the Current Permission Stettings for Windows, but You can make Permission changes”.
I thank you in advance for any insight on the problem you can provide
