Yes I do. If you try to change the permissions from within a standard user account in Windows you will definitely get the following kind of errors:

“Unable to save permission changes on Windows
Access is denied.”

“Unable to set new owner on Windows.
Access is denied.”

You first need to logon to Windows as administrator or at least as a user who has an administrator account. Then you’ll be able to do things like change permissions of registry keys and or take ownership of them etc.

Access is denied.”
STILL having trouble with install. I’ve followed all instructions in this thread, and still no luck. When I go to save, I get permission denied – changes not saved. Any more suggestions? Thanks in advance . . .

If you have already uninstalled Bitdefender I suggest using the Bitdefender removal tool to automatically clean up any remaining traces, which AVG seems to be detecting.

The Bitdefender removal help page is at:

Or just go straight to downloading the Bitdefender removal tool at:
http://www.bitdefender.com/files/KnowledgeBase/file/BitDefender_Uninstall_Tool.exe

This tool works on Vista (32 or 64bit systems). Download it and run it to erase any remaining traces of Bitdefender.
Try to install AVG again.

i m using windows vista.i used bitdefender earler as antivirus.now when i want to install avg antivirus it is asking me to unstall the bitdefender,though i have already unstalled it.please help me with this

Hi there. I found this resolution myself. As Tyr adds, when I tried to look at the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows it brings a ‘denied access’ error.

Before I could delete the two ‘deny’ entries I had to go to the key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows and right-click.
You will see a ‘permissions…’.

1. Left-click on: permissions… > advanced > Owner (tab)
2. Now left-click in ‘Change owner to:’ box.
3. Click on “Administrators”.
4. Now click OK twice. This procedure is what Calum is suggesting to take ownership.

Now right-click on the key again and follow the instructions to delete the two ‘deny’ entries described above. Good work all, this has really helped me.
