Like many of you, I heard (I was in the other room) the TV ad for FinallyFast.com. Being the geek that I am, I had to see what it was all about. They claim that they’ll speed-up your computer by fixing errors, blah, blah, blah… It was the same old stuff.

So I downloaded the software, PC SpeedScan Pro, by a company called Ascentive, and installed it on my machine. I scanned through the EULA, before installing it, of course. I saw no mention of any third-party advertising software or ad support.

Like all of the other “free registry scan” programs, it will find hundreds of errors and then prompt you to buy the software to fix the errors that it found. Of course, I wasn’t going to buy it. I’ve never been a big fan of automatic registry cleaners. Mostly because they’re just too aggressive, but also because many of them contain spyware, adware or viruses.

The bulk of these programs, including StopSign, just report false errors and trick you into purchasing their software to remove what was never there in the first place!

I uninstalled the software. Then I decided to run a full scan with AVG.

Not to my surprise, AVG discovered a registry key had been added (“HKU\…..Software\Ascentive”) which was adware related. AVG specifically labeled/identified it as “Adware.RogueSuspect”. AVG “healed” it, but I also had to go into the registry to remove the suspect key (HKU\…\Software\Ascentive).

I surely hope that enough people read this post and share it to make this company very short-lived.
