Many more people know about the free “office” suite from OpenOffice.org than are actually taking advantage of it. OpenOffice offers a word processor (similar to Word), a spreadsheet program (compatible with Excel files), a presentation creator (similar to PowerPoint) and more. All at the amazingly-low price of $0.00!

With OpenOffice, you can view and edit most of the Microsoft Office file formats, just as if you were using Microsoft Office! You can even assiociate the MS Office file formats with OpenOffice. That way, when someone using MS Office sends you an email, with an attached Word document, you’ll be able to view and edit the file with no problems.

Add to all of this the ability to print directly to PDF and you’ve got yourself a winner! Keep in mind, there is still a bit of a learning curve involved in switching from MS Office to OpenOffice. It’s not like you won’t be able to figure it out on your own. It’s more like a “getting used to it” period. See the attached screenshot to get an idea of what the OpenOffice interface looks like.
