ZoneAlarm Validation Errors (Missing Root Certificate)
Yesterday, I was working remotely on my sister’s machine. She complained that she was receiving constant “validation errors” with ZoneAlarm. More specifically, errors relating to zclient.exe, vsinit.dll and vsdata.dll., because of a missing or damaged root security certificate.
No matter what I tried, I couldn’t get the error messages to stop. You can’t uninstall the program, because you get the same error messages. It seemed that any process relating to ZoneAlarm caused the same error messages.
I started searching around for the problem and stumbled on a site that I’ve never seen before (sorry, I didn’t make note of it). The person writing said to change the system date, back seven days, then try to uninstall ZoneAlarm.
It worked! Once I was able to uninstall ZoneAlarm, I could have either re-installed it or replaced it with something else. I chose to replace it. Not that I have anything against ZoneAlarm, it’s just that my current favorite is AVG. I tend to shy away from security suites. The more actual control I have over my computer, and what’s on it, the better.

FWIW if you don’t add the /clean switch to the uninstaller target there will be orphaned files in the system32 directory and registry. One solution is to clean up the remnants using Check Point’s version of SYMNRT.

Thanks, John! Good to see you’re still around.
Thanks for the tip.. It worked for me too! I had to roll back a full year though, 7 days wasn’t enough. I don’t know exactly how far back would have worked but a year did the trick.
Thanks again!
Thanks, I have tried several things and many hours to get rid of this error. I had to roll back to the year I bought the computer and set it for Jan. After a restart the error was gone :) and I was able to delete the program.
Thanks again!
