UPDATE 12-10-2009: I thought I had seen the last of the finallyfast.com TV commercials, but, last night, I saw another. Different ad copy, but all the same, lame premise.
As a geek and a friend to my customers, I have to let you know about the heavily-advertised MyCleanPC.com and DoubleMySpeed.com computer cleaning scams.
I had posted articles, a while back, about FinallyFast.com and Ascentive PC SpeedScan Pro. Just as I had suspected, this was a scam to install rogue security programs and spyware on your computer.
I just checked WOT (Web of Trust) and both of these new sites received “dangerous” ratings. McAfee’s SiteAdvisor reports similar findings, at least for MyCleanPC.com. I’m not going to go through the hassle of installing anything they have to offer, just so I can report that they’re bundled with malware. You’re just going to have to trust me on this.
You can check the results on Google for reviews and ratings on both of these products. Simple rule, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Domain Ownership
The domain names MyCleanPC.com and DoubleMySpeed.com are both owned by a company called CyberDefender, a known spyware vendor. You can check the whois information (for DoubleMySpeed.com), here. Both websites are hosted by the company CyberDefender.
Please post about your experience with the products offered by MyCleanPC.com or DoubleMySpeed.com, below.

I’m glad I checked up on doublemyspeed.com first, after reading everyones comments I won’t be going there. But I use Webroot Internet Security Essentials, can I still run the software you suggested from malwarebytes.org and superantispyware.com. So far webroot has been doing great my system is just running slow at times. I even went through the start up menu and took those programs out that don’t need to be running. FYI I’m running a HP laptop with Windows Vista SP2 and 4gb RAM.
Thank you for your time and hard work.
Richard,
Thanks for your input! Don’t forget to clean your temporary file folders.
greetings: I saw the commericial and went to their website. I had heard on the net that this was a rip-off. I had just purchased a brand new laptop, and there is no way that there would be anything “harmful”. I ran the scan, and lo and behold, i had over 400 “errors” So, just to be safe, I did a complete system restore. ran the scan again, and violla over 400 errors. what a rip off. BTW, I didn’t purchase it and tried to contact them however, there is no way to do this.
Richard,
In my 13+ years of IT Consulting I promote either Trend Micro, or Vipre for the Antivirus software. I’ve found that Webroot is a major system resource hog, along with the fact that Norton and McAfee can and will let things come in that you least expect. Of course the best practice of all is not to open emails from people you don’t know, and dont frequent websites such as porn, etc. None the less, just wanted to voice my opinion here for the folks who are thinking about these so called TV ads about fixing your PC and making it run faster…don’t do it, it’s not true. Pay for protection, you’re better off that way.
you are an idiot Hank, trend micro is good anti-virus. I feel sorry for the people who you recommend security software for.
@Jay: Trend is what Hank recommends to his customers.
I believe that Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, O’reilly, and all the other talking heads of radio and TV simply do not care that these commercials are scamming people. The vast majority of all these commercials are rip offs in one way or another, especially the “free trials”. I can name several commercials I have seen or heard that I have checked out and they are scams.
That may be, John. I tend to believe that they just don’t realize it.
Beck, Limbaugh, et al have no control over commercials inserted by local stations and sometimes even those aired by the networks that carry their shows. They only endorse those products for which they actually voice the commercial.
Our local radio stations have really been blasting the DoubleMySpeed.com ads and it’s the same old scam that’s been going on for years. A great way to mess up your machine and give you lots of headaches.
Folks, the fastest way to speed up an old computer is quite simple. Clean out all of the programs you don’t need, delete ALL temporary internet files while logged in as Administrator in safe mode (there’s really no other way, clean out your user temp files and clean out Windows\temp. Check to make sure Windows\tasks isn’t running anything major. If so, delete the task. Then hit the registry and clean out everything you don’t need running in under the two major run lines in HKCU and HKLM. Look these exact paths up please. Too long to post. I’m lazy. lol Then do a defrag!!!!
Next step? Go buy a new hard drive from CompUSA or Microcenter for $70 or so and have somebody ghost it for you. Make sure you get the right type of drive, ie SATA or IDE. If your PC is really old it will be IDE and you would be safe to purchase a 120Gb or smaller drive due to the 137Gb limitation of older computers. You can always update to the newest BIOS but that doesn’t mean it will have support for larger drives.
Have a techie GHOST the new drive and install it. You’ll not only have a complete backup of your system because you’ll have your old drive but you’ll have a nice, new, BIGGER AND FASTER hard drive. I’ve done maybe 30 of them this year for my clients! Very cheap and an awesome fix to keep you running another 3 years. Money is tight these days. Don’t waste it on these phonies!!!!!
Gunny, thanks for the great info!
Yeah, the ad is all scare tactics and tells the people who don’t know enough to be suspicious that their computer can run like new. They won’t even mention that an eight year old computer ain’t gonna even if you manage to clean all malware and viruses off, because of updated software that the user needs.
They’re playing the ads a lot on the minor cable networks, and the age of the computer being ignored is really the best argument to inexperienced people.
Mr.Coyne:,
I two watched mycleanpc on TV and started to try it on my PC, then i read your reviews on these scammers. I am so glad there is a decent person like you on this earth. Keep up the good work you are doing, and may you have a blessed year.
For the truly diabolical Extortionware, the kind that blocks DNS for any website belonging to A/V and Anti-Malware vendors and uses a Kill Process script for any installed protection on the PC I’ve found Dr. Web’s Cure-It and Hitman Pro v3.5 to both be very good at detection and removal with Hitman Pro particularly so.
After two years time, its probably a good time to do some spring cleaning. Sometimes, when things get really bad the only solution is to back up your important files and do a complete hard drive wipe. Then you can reinstall your operating system and other important programs from your original disks.
If you have system recovery disks that put on a lot of trial versions and other unnecessary software, make good use of ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. Follow that up with a registry cleaning by a program like CClean. Your computer will run like a dream. You can also use the msconfig program that comes with windows to see what programs are running at startup and shut down anything unnecessary.
I have tried four of these Speedup programs and I would urge you to avoid all of them. They will diagnose your problem, then give you the bad news and discover that to fix the problem you have to buy the service to fix your PC — not very Kosher in my judgment! The worst one was planted in my PC 2 years ago and I cannot remove it! It came via AOL and is called SpeeditUp. This kind of interference and mischief is going to poison the Internet if the organizations who legitimately try to protect our interests do not do a more effective job! It will eventually lead to Government intervention and more third-party mischief.
73, Chuck
A hundred working techs post here the truth about these Extortionware vendors with just “two” posts from supposed happy customers that read like ads from the crooks themselves. Why does Tom Cruise on Scientology come to mind?
I get a call every other day to remove this software from client’s PC’s that it has crippled. It takes between one and two hours to remove.
Who do you believe?
We have a laptop that was getting slower and slower, and a desktop that was all but unusable. DoubleMySpeed technicians got both machines to work like new. This was after I had tried other software, both free and purchased, and had followed my own organization’s IT advice.
The company’s personnel was polite, professional, and knowledgable at every stage. Some problems with the desktop took longer, but they were persistent in solving the problems.
Perhaps they are overpriced and aggressive in their claims, although they way more than doubled the speed of our desktop. At this point I’d never call them a scam. We are very happy with the results and the company.
Do you know if they work with vista?
Ron,
I’ve used them with Vista. I’ve never had an issue.
Hey Ed, Sorry to bug you. I was told by a person who said they were a pc tech that using avg9.0,malwarbytes,superantispyware and spybot does not work on windows vista? is this true. I really am curios as to what the facts are. Thanks again for all the great info you provide. Thanks again.Ron
I’m running Windows 7 with no issues, as far as those programs go.
I’m just starting a home based computer business in the Appleton, WI area. I was looking for programs to help potential customers. I was about to try mycleanpc.
I don’t think I will now. I did try ccleaner and it seems like a pretty good program. AVG seems like an O.K free antivirus as is Comodo. (Comodo does give too many false positives, though.) Ad-aware is a good free antispyware program, but I haven’t tried the Malwarebytes product that you recommend yet.
Of the paid programs, I’m less than impressed with Bitdefender (I used to swear by it.), and Norton and McAfee are even worse. I’ve had good luck with CA and I’ve had very good reports from others about Kasperski.
My experience over the years is that a clean pc is a fast pc. Don’t install unnecessary junk on your computer, avoid questionable websites, and use a good antivirus program. The secret isn’t some magical piece of computer software. It’s about developing good computing habits.
The ad for MyCleanPc.com ran during a program tonight on HInt and just out of curiosity I did a search, found your site, and am in 100% agreement with you! I am a PC tech by trade and over 25% of my time lately is devoted to cleaning trojans and malware from unknowing users’ PCs. I appreciate your site here, and will send many to it in the future. I swear by Malwarebytes and in fact am trying to get an enterprise license to supplement the pathetic Symantec EPP we currently use – catches NOTHING!
Keep up the good work!
All I can say is avoid Cyberdefender like it is the plague it is. I got it on my computer through a force download and it was major pain in the neck to get it off. The uninstall does not work and the every three second popup “warnings” continue on and on. It was very frustrating and almost prompted me to reformat and reload everything. I was finally able to track down and eradicate it but not without my share of migrane headaches. Somehow I’m not surprised that they are associated with other “scareware” and “extortionware”.
I saw the ad mycleanpc.com on tv today and was going to try it. Before I got to it, I saw your page of reviews and decided to read them first. I’m glad I did. I’ve had enough problems with virus’ and trojans & don’t need any more. My computer is fairly new and can’t afford another one. I downloaded the free AVG and so far it hasn’t let me down. Unfortunately, I wasn’t so lucky with my laptop. Didn’t get virus protection in time on it and well, it now has virus’ galore.
I used to work at Charter Communications doing tech support on the phone. We supplied antivirus/firewall free to our customers, and we would help them install if they needed it. The software was from F-Secure, and I’m still using it now that I’ve retired. Last time I looked, it was rated #3 for quality. I forget who the two ahead of it were, but you can check their reputation on the web.
I can’t tell you how many times with just my friends I have had to go back and undo or even reinstall windows because of these scam artist! I even had one friend who attempted to buy the notorious Windows Spyware Agent and thank God her computer at that point wouldn’t even go online. Malwarebytes is by far the best program I have found for spyware! Of course Spybot S&D is the old faithful and although some don’t like McAfee, I have used it for years in conjunction with both aforementioned programs and my machines always stay clean and perform.
Just as a personal opinion note, if you use and like Spybot S&D donate, same with Malwarebytes (buy the full version it’s like 24 bucks). Those guys work hard to keep us safe and both are worth what little money you will invest!
I had some unknown crap clogging me that Adaware, Spybot, and F-Secure couldn’t handle. I heard about malwarebytes, checked its reputation out, and it handled the clog.
Glad I read the comments before going to the site. Will check out maiwarebytes.org and superantispyware.com
Thanks for the heads up on this mycleanpc trap. Really appreciate the information on this site…you guys ROCK! I’ve been looking for ways to get a gip on what’s running at startup, so I tried some of Ed’s suggested links. Excellent!
Mary, check out Avast antivirus and Malware Bytes Anti-Malware. With these 2 programs I haven’t had a problem yet. Avast is well-known to be some of the best anti-virus in the business, and it’s free for the home edition.
As far as your computer’s slowness is concerned, you can usually help it by clearing all of your internet caches and running a defragment. If you’re really feeling gutsy, you can try to turn off some unneeded services in your windows startup.
But to answer your question, finallyfast.com, mycleanpc.com, and doublemyspeed.com are all scams.
I’m glad I read your page. I don’t know a lot about computers and mine is an old IBM ThinkPad. It’s slow, so I was attracted to the MyCleanPC commercial. I was about to get it until I decided to read your comments, first. I also read HughesNet, which all I could get from it was money, money and more money. Is it a good program?
Showed this page, thread, whatever to my husband and he told me that the IT department for his agency (he works for the state we work in) sent out an email about this program warning that it’s a scam and not to download it to the State computers. They also warned against downloading it to private PCs. Still see the ads on TV and hear them on the radio. Tend to shake my head and wonder why we make it so easy for scammers to appear legit. Thought I’d share.
I too was considering mycleanpc but will go with the FREE steps outlined above. I’m not sure about how to do the safe mode stuff … please advise. My computers are slowing way down and one locks up all the time. I like to multitask and have many programs open at once but they seem to lock up a lot in the middle of tasks and it seems to be getting worse. I’m continually using CTRL-ALT-DEL. Has that been hurting my computer at all? Also, what about ccleaner.com or are all those in the same boat? Thanks so much for the help. I am a novice when it comes to fixing problems on the computer.
Lauri,
Access Safe Mode by rebooting your computer and pressing the F8 key, once you see the motherboard manufacturer’s logo, about every second or so.
CCleaner is a decent product. I’ve never heard anything bad about it, but just keep in mind that some of the same type of products are bundled with spyware or are over or under-aggressive.

now the “true oldies channel” is running this ad…perhaps someone should “advise” them of this huge “scam”…
I’m a independent tech and the current terminology for this kind of software is “extortionware.” Once the softwares on your PC, you have to pay to get it off. As a hallmark of the essential dishonesty of it’s purveyors, not even paying stops the incessant false virus warnings and now the crooks have your credit card info.
Cyberdefender, Bitdefender, Desktop Defender, Pareto Software are all names I’ve encountered this year on client’s machines. One example even made the monitor judder while playing a .wav file of static. Anything to get the mark running. These guys are crooks and letting thier software on your PC will reduce your enjoyment, bank account and likely your credit.
These programs are a crock! Most people have speed problems that are just related to their internet browsers. Most can be fixed by removing all the extra add-ons and junk that software from many manufacturers try to install. If you think its your machine first try another web browser. if it improves your surfing speed significantly then you can be reasonably sure most of your problem is from all the additional junkware hanging on your browser!
All of these are scams. It ruined my computers and I lost everything( pic of kids and pets. Emails, personal info and paperwork.) DON’T DO IT, I WILL RUIN YOU LIFE FOR MONTH AND COST YOU A LOT OF MONEY.
Hey again Ed,Do I need to run my avg, spybot etc in safe mode b/c I usually just do it while I am online. Sorry for my mis-spells in earlier post,I was in a hurry. You are a great guy.thanks again.Ron
Ron,
It’s always best to run security scans in Safe Mode. There are a very limited number of processes running in Safe Mode, which subsequently provides less of a chance for a file (infected or otherwise) to be “locked” for scanning.
Ed, I wanted to let you know that the commercial on tv for mycleanpc tonight at 11.30 pm time slot. I don’t know if I can get in trouble for stating the channel and show,it’s very ironic,I mean the name of the show ties in sort of. Also I want to thank you for your info on pc cleanup. My computer was being attacted on all flanks and I followed the 4 steps avg 9.0,malwarebytes,superantispyware, and my fav spybot and it is all the free ones and my computer is running great. The only problem is that my wife’s screen has the so-called blue screen of death? I thank you again it save me a lot of money. Thanks so much you are a great guy, Ron
Ed,
Are the Registry Clean programs legit or are the like the double my speed programs?
How do I speed up my computer after running the malwarebytes and Superantivirus? Do I need to add memory?
Thanks for your help
Mark
Mark,
I don’t know what your current configuration is, so I can’t tell you if you even have the capacity to add more memory. Please read the following articles. They may help you get your computer running as fast as possible.
Computer Technician Secret: Remove Spyware and Viruses
MSConfig: Take Control Of Your Computer
After you run through those steps, use the Crucial System Scanner to find out what your memory options are.
I am a retired IT tech from a large corporation and now run a part time computer repair service out of the home. You have surely hit the nail on the head with this article and I can’t agree with you more. Although I have good writing skills I have forwarded a link to this page to many of my more naive clients. I wish all advertising could be halt and these scammers punished. Feel free to let me know if there is anything I can do. Wayne
I Heard The Commercial for doublemyspeed.com on the radio and by mistake i downloaded it to try it out.I had installed a fresh copy of windows xp on my computer, the scan said i had 1065 errors. How can this happen after reinstalling windows xp? This program is CRAP!!!! My Advice, DO NOT USE IT!!! It Took Me 3 or 4 hours to remove it. The only way to remove the errors is to pay first. they should call it F***MyComputer.com.
Hi Ed, thanks for the heads up on MycleanPC.com. My 5 year old HP computer is running slower and slower, and I keep having problems with Microsoft WORD, including blue screens and error reports that are impossible to understand.
I am not a Techie, so Query, is there a professional site you do recommend? I am willing to pay a reasonable fee for a safe ethical service.
Thank you kindly,
D. Welsh

Computer Technician Secret: Remove Spyware and Viruses
How to Remove Spyware and Viruses
The urge to say “Mike” is connected to Cyberdefender and trying to do some serious “spin” is overwhelming me. I’d have loved to have run an IP trace on him and see where he was connecting from. :|
Heard. Agreed. I’m just trying to be fair. You should see some of the comments that DON’T get approved.
I got the free Cyberdefender anti-virus program (the parent company to doublemyspeed and mycleanpc) first off their website which found a lot of stuff on my system and got rid of the spyware and Trojans. I didn’t get the paid version since the free scanner didn’t find any viruses I didn’t buy the upgrade then. In the past, some of the software that I installed on my system I couldn’t get completely un-installed. As a test I un-installed Cyberdefender, and found that it was completely removed, no lingering pops or other stuff.
I re-installed Cyberdefender and ran it once a month or any time I got strange pop ups, just check so viruses, spyware or other bad stuff. About 2 weeks ago, a virus came along and Cyberdefender caught it, and so I bought the upgrade to get rid of the virus. I later ran Cyberdefender after the upgrade and it could not detect the virus. Since then, no problems. This is my experience with Cyberdefender – really good software and the 24/7 computer help is great.
Mike,
Glad to hear your “success” story. Just for your own peace of mind. Download MalwareBytes AntiMalware (malwarebytes.org). Update it and run a full scan. You could do the same with SUPERAntiSpyware (superantispyware.com). My guess is that you won’t be such a fan of CyberDefender, once you’re done. However, I actually hope that nothing is found.
I just saw the “MyCleanPC.com” commercial last night. I was excited! It sounded like a product I could use for my daughter’s troubled PC. Now I’m really glad I did a search for reviews of this software first. I’m sure you’ve saved me time, money, and endless frustration by exposing this fraudulent company.
With that said, the computer is still in need of a doctor. I can’t even access the control panel anymore! My (un)educated guess is that there is one or more viruses (teenagers!). Where do I start?
When it comes to fixing computers I’m quite the novice.
Start here: Computer Technician Secret: Remove Spyware and Viruses
Glad that I chose to run a search on the CleanMyPC.com software. Saw the commercial yesterday and thought that maybe it couldn’t hurt to look into it. But after reading your thoughts on it, I think that it would have hurt to actually go to the sight. Although according to McAfee (which what I have on the computer) the sight is green, even though there seems to be split opinion on the site. Cyberspace is a very confusing world. Thanks so much for the work put into getting the word out about CleanMyPC.com.
Saw in other comments that you recommended a few programs for anit-malware, given that I have McAfee already on the computer, should I consider visiting those sites and downloading the programs?
Tracy, each of those programs can be run in addition to having McAfee installed.
is the free addition of the SUPERANTISPYWARE program worth the download and use?
Chet, I use the free version all the time. It’s definitely worth trying. I believe you also get a one-time shot, after installation, to get the full version for about $20.
Good luck!
Double My Speed is running ads on the Howard Stern Show on Sirius
Thanks, Robert. I hope someone will contact the show and let them know what it is that they’re advertising.
Thanks for the heads up! My office computer got that cyberdefender on it somehow and we had to call our IT guys to come get it off! It was such a nuisance. Now my home comp is so slow I can’t stand it and was checking out Doublemyspeed. You saved the day….better slow than totally crippled!!!
Thanks for the feedback! These things save me time, money and a lot of frustration!:-)
Thanks again:-)
-Jaymes
Ok so no mycleanpc for me. I just got my comp and id rather not see it fried.
THNX
Thanks for all the heads up. I was going to use mycleanpc.com, because my computer is running very slow, but then I saw these comments and will not use them. Any suggestions to who can help?
David,
I would do the following:
Run a Disk Cleanup. Download MalwareBytes AntiMalware (malwarebytes.org) and SuperAntispyware (superantispyware.com), update them both and run full scans. If possible, boot to Safe Mode to run the scans. You may also want to install-update-run Spybot S&D (safer-networking.org).
Good luck!
I went to DOUBLE MY SPEED and you were right they are attached to CYBERDEFENDER and have something called “Parento” cyber? which I cannot no matter what I do DELETE IT OFF my computer!! My computer is 7 YEARS OLD AND LOW ON RAM , it is a Emachine and I will dump it soon. However I will never do this again with any computer! It keeps saying my registry or drivers are old and outdated and I should clean them up but I need to give a key number and only way is buying the Cyber Parento product!something about a bundle ddl’s pop up and hard to close!
LEARNED MY LESSON!!! YOUR RIGHT!!
February 18th/2010 at 9:15 pm PST, I just saw an ad on TV to download MyCleanPC.com ; So I went to Google Chrome and typed it in and up popped your comments – (Thank GOD). Needless to say I didn’t download their junk. I have problems enough of my own, I don’t need theirs. So far my XP Professional is 100% clean – just slow, not enough ram and it’s getting a bit old. Oh well, I’ll be getting Windows 7 (as large as they can make it) for my office in a couple of months, so I guess I’m OK!
Thanks for the heads up !
I have malwarebytes installed. And even trying to go to the site malwarebytes blocks its ip address so then the page doesn’t even load. So from the beginning it’s doing stuff. I do not understand why they are able to have those commercials on the tv in the first place. It should be considered illegal.
IP blocked three times: 208.108.60.20
It’s called “greed”. Money and greed goes hand in hand and advertisers sometimes does not take time to check out what they’re putting out for the public to watch in the privacy of their screens. It’s also called “one-way – communication wherein it’s designed to persuade us to believe and go along with them with no chance to ask any questions, and before you know it, you’ve been scammed. For the meantime, guess who’s bank account is getting fatter and fatter.Dig?
Please keep an ear out and let me know if you’re still hearing the MyCleanPC.com and DoubleMySpeed.com ads on Rush Limbaugh’s and Glenn Beck’s radio shows. I contacted both of them to let them know what they were actually advertising.
My 7 year old Computer used to be slow, but NOW; it’s blazingly fast! It’s faster than brand new machines. It’s true! You never need a new computer ever again! Thanks DoubleMySpeed!!!!
Wait….what’s this windows…and that one..and that..ohnoooo.
All I know is the advertisements are hilarious. Those “customers” sound so satisfied, how could you not believe them?
Thank you, I was going to buy this but after reading your review as well as others. I now know as I suspected that it is just another scam.
Carlo,
I think we just need to educate our friends and family on how to avoid scams like these. Once everyone knows what’s up, these companies will slither back under the rocks from whence they came. No need to get the government involved.
Thanks for your input!
No truer words have been spoken. Bunch of jerks. I think the ads are slowing down. At least in Dallas lately.
