WARNING: Fake Antivir Rogue Antivirus

Fake Antivir Logo
I just want to provide a quick warning about what I witnessed on a customer’s computer, yesterday. In the last two weeks, I’ve received at least ten calls regarding fake alerts and rogue antivirus programs infecting peoples’ computers.
Until yesterday, it was always some no-name program like “Win Antivirus”, “PCAntiMalware”, “XP Antivirus Protection” or “Antivirus 2009″. Yesterday was different, though. This one had actually taken the name “Antivir”, which, in reality, is a trusted antivirus program, offered by a company called “Avira”.

Real Avira Antivir Logo
This fake “Antivir” had an interface that very closely resembled the AVG interface, with all the same icons and text. Of course, they wanted you to “activate” the software for full protection. In that case they would have not only charged you for a program that would only infect your computer further, but they also would have all your credit card and contact information.
The real Antivir can be found on Avira’s website and doesn’t look anything like the fake/rogue version.
