        WARNING: Fake Antivir Rogue Antivirus

        Fake Antivir Logo

        Fake Antivir Logo

I just want to provide a quick warning about what I witnessed on a customer’s computer, yesterday. In the last two weeks, I’ve received at least ten calls regarding fake alerts and rogue antivirus programs infecting peoples’ computers.

          MyCleanPC.com and DoubleMySpeed.com are Scams

UPDATE 12-10-2009: I thought I had seen the last of the finallyfast.com TV commercials, but, last night, I saw another. Different ad copy, but all the same, lame premise.

As a geek and a friend to my customers, I have to let you know about the heavily-advertised MyCleanPC.com and DoubleMySpeed.com computer cleaning scams.

I had posted articles, a while back, about FinallyFast.com and Ascentive PC SpeedScan Pro. Just as I had suspected, this was a scam to install rogue security programs and spyware on your computer.

Computer Technician Secret: Remove Spyware and Viruses

Most technicians are probably against having this information posted publicly. However, I’m an information guy and I enjoy passing along a computer secret, every now and then. Of course, this information is only secret to some and common knowledge to others.

***Keep in mind, this entry refers to removing files that are buried fairly deep inside Windows. Security products do what they are designed to do – remove infected files. If a Windows system file is infected and removed, Windows may no longer work properly. Don’t attempt any of this if you don’t feel confident in doing so. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, call a local professional computer technician.***

***Use this information at your own risk.***

              Three Must-Have Programs for Windows

From setting up new computers to cleaning up and organizing older computers, there are five three must-have Windows-based programs that I pass along to my customers.

              Picasa

              Photo Editing and Organizing
The simplest free photo-editing and organizing program, for me, is Google’s Picasa 3. It’s a snap to install and it doesn’t slow down your computer, like Kodak’s Easy Share software. You can also share photos and albums with a free Google account. This account will provide access to Picasa Web Albums and other Google services.

                  TrendMicro: New Adobe Zero-Day Exploit

Please visit TrendMicro to read more on this exploit!

Trend Micro threat analysts were alerted to the discovery of a zero-day exploit that affects Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.1.3 and earlier versions (CVE-2009-3459). Trend Micro detects this as TROJ_PIDIEF.UO. This .PDF file contains an embedded JavaScript, which Trend Micro detects as JS_AGENTT.DT. This JavaScript is used to execute arbitrary codes in a technique known as heap spraying. In addition, there is a possibility that a future variant may be created that does not use JavaScript to exploit the said vulnerability.
