Scam

You Can Throw MaxMySpeed.com Onto The Trash Heap, Too!

OK…just saw my first MaxMySpeed.com TV commercial, from…you guessed it! CyberDefender! These guys just don’t quit! Apparently, CyberDefender’s newest manifestation of scamware is MaxMySpeed.com. The TV commercial promises the same positive results as its predecessors. “Removes errors, Speeds up your computer, Removes spyware and viruses…”. They even show multiple people’s “testimonials” about how wonderful this junk is. Same old, same old.

WARNING: Fake Antivir Rogue Antivirus

I just want to provide a quick warning about what I witnessed on a customer's computer, yesterday. In the last two weeks, I've received at least ten calls regarding fake alerts and rogue antivirus programs infecting peoples' computers. Until yesterday, it was always some no-name program like "Win Antivirus", "PCAntiMalware", "XP Antivirus Protection" or "Antivirus 2009". Yesterday was different, though. This one had actually taken the name "Antivir", which, in reality, is a trusted antivirus program, offered by a company called "Avira". Read the rest of this entry »

MyCleanPC.com and DoubleMySpeed.com are Scams

As a geek and a friend to my customers, I have to let you know about the heavily-advertised MyCleanPC.com and DoubleMySpeed.com computer cleaning scams. I had posted an article, a while back, about the FinallyFast.com commercials and related products. Just as I had suspected, this was a scam to install rogue security programs and spyware on your computer. Read the rest of this entry »

FinallyFast.com TV Ads: PC SpeedScan Pro Contains Adware.RogueSuspect

Like many of you, I heard (I was in the other room) the TV ad for FinallyFast.com. Being the geek that I am, I had to see what it was all about. They claim that they’ll speed-up your computer by fixing errors, blah, blah, blah… It was the same old stuff.

So I downloaded the software, PC SpeedScan Pro, by a company called Ascentive, and installed it on my machine. I scanned through the EULA, before installing it, of course. I saw no mention of any third-party advertising software or ad support.

Rogue Computer Security Products

You’re happily surfing the web when you get a popup telling you that “your computer has been infected by such and such. Click here to remove the infection.”

You click…, you pay…, you infect.

It’s simple marketing. If they see that you paid once, they’re going to try to get you to pay again! It may not be today or tomorrow, but sooner or later, you’re going to see a similar “infection” notice on your computer. Will you pay again?
