WARNING: Fake Antivir Rogue Antivirus

Fake Antivir Logo
I just want to provide a quick warning about what I witnessed on a customer’s computer, yesterday. In the last two weeks, I’ve received at least ten calls regarding fake alerts and rogue antivirus programs infecting peoples’ computers.
MyCleanPC.com and DoubleMySpeed.com are Scams
UPDATE 12-10-2009: I thought I had seen the last of the finallyfast.com TV commercials, but, last night, I saw another. Different ad copy, but all the same, lame premise.
As a geek and a friend to my customers, I have to let you know about the heavily-advertised MyCleanPC.com and DoubleMySpeed.com computer cleaning scams.
I had posted articles, a while back, about FinallyFast.com and Ascentive PC SpeedScan Pro. Just as I had suspected, this was a scam to install rogue security programs and spyware on your computer.
Erin Andrews Video Clip May Infect Your PC
Thinking about searching for the video clip of ESPN’s Erin Andrews undressing? Not so fast!
The recently-leaked video clip of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews undressing, filmed through a hotel room peephole, may be a cloaked attempt to infect your computer with a virus. Just a word of warning.
Scam Email: “An Emergency Please”
I received an email, yesterday, appearing to be from one of my customers, using a Yahoo! email account. The subject was “An Emergency Please”. Here is the exact text of the email, spelling and grammar mistakes included:
How To Remove Ascentive PC SpeedScan Pro
This is just a quick update to a post I had originally published, just a few weeks back. This post is for people who need to know how to remove Ascentive PC SpeedScan Pro and all the garbage that comes with it.
I thought I had gotten rid of all traces of Ascentive PC SpeedScan Pro, shortly after I tested and uninstalled it. As it turns out, I was mistaken.
FinallyFast.com TV Ads: PC SpeedScan Pro Contains Adware.RogueSuspect
Like many of you, I heard (I was in the other room) the TV ad for FinallyFast.com. Being the geek that I am, I had to see what it was all about. They claim that they’ll speed-up your computer by fixing errors, blah, blah, blah… It was the same old stuff.
So I downloaded the software, PC SpeedScan Pro, by a company called Ascentive, and installed it on my machine. I scanned through the EULA, before installing it, of course. I saw no mention of any third-party advertising software or ad support.
Rogue Computer Security Products
You’re happily surfing the web when you get a popup telling you that “your computer has been infected by such and such. Click here to remove the infection.”
You click…, you pay…, you infect.
It’s simple marketing. If they see that you paid once, they’re going to try to get you to pay again! It may not be today or tomorrow, but sooner or later, you’re going to see a similar “infection” notice on your computer. Will you pay again?
