Because it's included with the Windows operating system (embedded with Internet Explorer), Outlook Express is the most commonly used local mail client in most areas of the world. However, many people still have difficulty setting up accounts, from which Outlook Express can retrieve email. For as many times as one may need to change their Internet Service Provider (ISP), we offer this article as a quick reference guide. Here's how to setup new accounts in Microsoft Outlook Express.

Although Windows Vista has already been released, at this time most of the population is still using Windows XP, so we'll base the instructions on that premise. You'll need to have some information, before you begin. The information will be provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). You'll need your new account username and password, your new email address and the incoming and outgoing email server names. Once you have acquired this information, you may begin at step one.

1. Referencing the image, below, click START, then choose ALL PROGRAMS, then choose OUTLOOK EXPRESS.

Starting Outlook Express

2. Once Outlook Express has opened, click TOOLS and then ACCOUNTS from the menu in the upper-left portion of the screen.

Outlook Express Accounts

3. From the Internet Accounts dialog box, click the ADD button, in the upper-right portion of the box, then choose MAIL.

4. Type your preferred display name in the dialog box shown in the following image. Then click NEXT.

5. Type your full email address in the dialog box, shown in the following image. Then click NEXT.

Type your full email address in the dialog box. Then click NEXT.

6. Enter the incoming and outgoing email server names, provided by your ISP, in the corresponding boxes on the Email Server Names dialog box, shown in the following image. Then click NEXT.

Enter the incoming and outgoing email server names.

7. Referring to the image below, type your account username and password in the appropriate boxes. This information is also provided by your ISP. Then click NEXT.

8. That will bring you to the setting confirmation dialog box, where you will be told CONGRATULATIONS. Click NEXT.

The following steps apply only to those users that are required to make changes to the default server and security settings. If you need to change the way Outlook Express connects to your email servers, follow steps 9-14.

9. From the Internet Accounts dialog box, highlight your email account and click PROPERTIES. Refer to the image, below:

Email account properties.

10. On the General tab of the Properties dialog box, you can make changes to the name of your account, your email address, your organization and your reply email address.

11. If you need to change the way Outlook Express connects to your email server, click the Servers tab. Here you can change your incoming and outgoing email server names, your account username and password and the server type.

Email servers tab.

12. If you need to change the way Outlook Express connects to your outgoing email server, put a check mark in the box labeled "My server requires authentication" (above) and click the SETTINGS button.

13. Refer to the image below to enter any special settings, provided by your ISP, for your outgoing email server. Then click OK.

Email server authentication.

14. The Connections and Security options don't often need to be changed, but you may need to change some settings on the Advanced tab. Click the Advanced tab to change the email server port settings, server timeouts and delivery options. Refer to the image, below:

This should be all you need to setup your Outlook Express email accounts.
